Description

This work is a unique, numbered edition from the limited run of 2,998 copies of  by Miquel Barceló, published by Ed. Planeta in 2011. This particular example is number 269. The edition is printed on Tintoretto Gesso 200 g paper and presented in a bespoke white maple wooden case, whose lid features a pyrogravure reproduction of an original work by the artist.

The set brings together several carefully conceived elements: a facsimile reproduction of the artist's own ; a companion volume exploring the discovery of the Chauvet Cave; and a large-format numbered sheet selected by Barceló, matching the edition number of the work. Together, these components form a cohesive publication that reflects both the physical intimacy of an artist's sketchbook and the monumental origins of prehistoric art.

At the conceptual heart of the project lies the Chauvet Cave, home to some of the world's most ancient and significant rock art. Barceló's response to the cave resulted in a series of watercolours that bridge prehistoric gesture and contemporary expression. In , this dialogue is distilled into 37 powerful drawings of felines, rendered with a single, confident stroke that unites movement from the distant past with the immediacy of the present.

The edition is signed and numbered by the artist and housed in a case measuring approximately 49 × 37 × 5.5 cm. The main art book, bound in raw cotton fabric with an exclusive drawing by Barceló on the cover, comprises 144 pages and measures approximately 43 × 33 cm. The accompanying study book contains 112 pages and matches the format, while the folded numbered sheet measures approximately 88 × 33 cm. This is a highly collectible artist's book that occupies a singular position between archive, artwork, and publishing object.

Miquel Barceló (1957) His eagerness to continuously experience and his inexhaustible energy have made this artist to continue to surprise, after forty years of experience. Barceló's early interest in art comes from his mother, a painter in the tradition of the Mallorcan landscape. From here, he has experimented with artistic movements such as  or , influenced by Jackson Pollock, among others. Finally, the self-taught artist found his own path, based on neo-expressionism.

Presentation

Miquel Barceló, born in 1957 in Felanitx, on the island of Mallorca, is one of the most internationally renowned contemporary Spanish artists. Trained at the Palma School of Decorative Arts and then briefly at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts, he began his career with the conceptual collective Taller Llunàtic. Influenced by art brut , neo-expressionism and major figures such as Antoni Tàpies , Jean Dubuffet and Jackson Pollock , he made his mark in the 1980s with a gestural and textured style, after a notable participation in Documenta 7 in Kassel in 1982.

Barceló's work is marked by constant experimentation with materials and formats. He works in painting, ceramics , drawing and sculpture with organic elements such as earth, sand or volcanic ash, often applied thickly to his canvases. His iconography evokes seascapes , caves or biblical scenes. His numerous stays in Africa, particularly in Mali, enriched his artistic universe, giving rise to emblematic series such as the African Notebooks. Among his major achievements are the decoration of the Sant Pere Chapel in Palma Cathedral in 2007 and the monumental dome of Room XX of the Palais des Nations in Geneva in 2008, a sculptural fresco of more than 1500 m².

Miquel Barceló has exhibited at major cultural institutions, including the Centre Pompidou, the Louvre, and the Museo Picasso Málaga. He has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Spanish National Prize for Plastic Arts and the Prince of Asturias Award. In 2024, he presented an exhibition dedicated to his relationship with the ocean at the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco and was commissioned to design three monumental tapestries for Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris in 2025. A multifaceted artist, his work, deeply rooted in nature and experimentation, remains one of the pillars of European contemporary art.
