Presentation
Piero Manai nasce a Bologna nel 1951.Intorno ai vent'anni incomincia a dipingere. Il suo percorso artistico puo' considerarsi esemplare per la complessita' delle tematiche affrontate e per la qualita' degli esiti formali raggiunti in due decenni di instancabile ricerca. Dopo un primo periodo di figurazione iperrealista e pop, nel quale si confronta con gli oggetti del mestiere di pittore: barattoli di colore, matite, carboncini, l'artista sperimenta tecniche differenti. E' in questo periodo che nasce la serie dei carboni, grandi opere che nel loro gigantismo esprimono la diretta fisicita' della forma e la perfetta coincidenza dello spazio e dei limiti dell'immagine. Immagini che successivamente si disintegrano, frantumandosi in volti, nature morte e paesaggi dai contorni rarefatti che filtrano citazioni dal passato. Le affinita' e le consonanze con alcune grandi figure della storia dell'arte quali Cezanne, Bacon, Schiele, Ensor, riaffiorano in Manai dando vita ad una pittura colta ed estremamente sofisticata. Siamo negli anni Ottanta, periodo fecondo e di grande successo, momento in cui Manai si sofferma su alcune tematiche, quali il linguaggio del corpo, l'eros e la morte, la relazione dell'individuo e il suo alter ego. Le grandi teste, i corpi finemente tratteggiati, sono documenti di una corporalita' danneggiata che attestano una qualita' pittorica, frutto di una difficile gestazione e contraddistinta da una inequivocabile identita' e riconoscibilita'. Gli anni '80 sono per Manai gli anni della notorieta' e dell'affermazione del suo lavoro. Partecipa infatti ad importanti rassegne in Italia ed all'estero, quali la Quadriennale di Roma (1986), la Triennale del Disegno alla Kunsthalle di Norimberga (1985) ed alla Biennale des Junes (Parigi, 1982). Nel 1988 a soli 37 anni muore a Bologna a causa di una grave malattia Nel 2004 e' organizzata a Bologna una retrospettiva di opere dal 1970 al 1988 Fra i numerosi critici che si sono occupati della sua opera ricordiamo F. Arcangeli, R. Barilli, F. Alinovi, T. Trini, P. Fossati, P.G. Castagnoli, V. Fagone, G. Celant, F. Caroli, F. Gualdoni, D. Trento.
