Description
This iconic photographic work by British artist Tom Hunter captures an intimate, quietly cinematic moment inside a converted bus used as a living space. The photograph reflects Hunter's distinctive ability to merge documentary realism with the visual language of classical painting.
Executed as a C-print, the photograph is hand-signed and dated by Tom Hunter and numbered from a strictly limited edition of only 25 copies.
This work is offered together with the XL art book The Way Home (Collector's Edition), published by Hatje Cantz. The hardcover volume contains approximately 200 pages of richly reproduced color photographs and provides an in-depth overview of Hunter's most important series. The book further contextualizes Set Girl in Trailer within Hunter's broader exploration of identity, displacement, and the politics of home in contemporary urban life.
Tom Hunter, born in Dorset in 1965, rose to international prominence in the late 1990s for his staged photographic tableaux inspired by Old Master paintings. Living and working in London's Hackney district, he focused on marginalized communities, squatters, and alternative ways of living, presenting them with dignity and poetic restraint. His work often reinterprets compositions by artists such as Vermeer, Caravaggio, and Millais, translating historical pictorial traditions into modern social narratives. Hunter's photographs are held in major museum collections, including Tate Britain, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art.

One of his most famous images, inspired by Vermeer s Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window, depicts a young woman reading an eviction notice, highlighting the housing struggles of the squatter community. The image gained so much media attention that the eviction was ultimately halted.
