French Country Interior

Welcome into the world of French country interiors where rustic charm meets refined style, inspired by the homes of the French countryside. A popular style worldwide, the French country interior has become adored for its comfortable and casual elegance. Three distinct characteristics are said to make up the style. Firstly, the softly patterned fabrics in muted colors. Secondly, the distressed, painted, and vintage furnishings and accessories and thirdly the heavy use of wood and other natural materials in traditional methods of craftsmanship.

One would associate this provincial style with the Toile fabric, a traditional pattern printed on cotton or linen fabrics used for upholstery, drapery, tablecloths, and wallpaper in French country house rooms. Toile de Jouy, as it was originally called, was first created in  the 18th-century factory of Jouy-en-Josas located near Versailles. Versailles, the seat of the French monarchy, has played a huge role in characterizing this style of artistic expression with its Rococo association to opulence and luxury. Colors of this style can be found on the warm side of the color wheel with hues. Think of soft yellows, warm pinks, baby blues, creams, sunbaked ochre and deep brick red that bring to mind the pigments found in the region's natural clay earth. The French country interior is as much about the exterior as it is about the interior. The toile pattern is characterized by its designs of landscapes depicting the bucolic countryside
