This vibrant and complex work, titled "Relaxing by the Water", masterfully captures a bucolic scene rich in color and detail. Created with a vibrant palette that immediately catches the eye, the artist uses strong black outlines to delineate the different shapes and planes, accentuating the dynamism of the composition.
At the center of the work, two women sit on a brightly colored geometric blanket. Their tranquil postures and pensive gaze suggest a moment of reflection and intimate communication. One of the women, dressed in a red and blue patterned dress, seems lost in thought while the other, dressed in a pink dress delicately adorned with abstract patterns, appears perplexed with a haggard gaze. In the background, a lush and enchanting landscape opens up before our eyes. A man, half submerged in a crystal clear river and surrounded by water lilies, draws a striking contrast to the female figures.
The waterfall, from which the water flows with a gentle but audible force, adds a sonic dimension to the work, inviting the viewer to imagine the soothing murmur of the water. The trees with curvy branches and lush foliage dance under the rays of a bright sun, filtering beams of light that illuminate the scene. Each leaf and flower is rendered with an almost hypnotic precision, testifying to the artist's delicate skill in capturing the beauty of nature. The framing of the work is remarkably bold, creating an inviting intimacy between the figures and the viewer. Each element of this work is carefully balanced to create visual harmony, while maintaining a constant liveliness and dynamism.
In short, "relaxation by the water" is an exceptional and clever mix that Zafi has masterfully and talentedly taken us through between Paul Gauguin's 2 Tahitian women and Edouard Manet and Claude Monet's Luncheon on the Grass. A truly electric celebration of nature and human relationships, full of symbolism and life, requiring active contemplation and appreciation for its richness of detail and emotional complexity.
"This painting that I made during the month of July and August was inspired by my boat trips on the Charente River from the marina located very close to my studio in the heart of Cognac. This scene of life is a moment of tent, appeasement and relaxation". Zafi
Jean-Claude Fitoussi, known by his artist name Zafi, continues to be a prominent figure in contemporary art, renowned for his unique interpretation of cubism and his ability to merge diverse artistic styles. His work has garnered significant attention in the art market, with notable exhibitions at international art fairs in Zurich, Lausanne, Brussels, and Luxembourg. In 2023, his impressive body of work was recognized with a certificate of artistic merit by the Pinacothèque du Luxembourg Museum, further cementing his place in the global art scene. Zafi’s paintings, characterized by vibrant colors and geometric shapes, challenge the boundaries of cubism while often incorporating figurative elements, creating a distinctive visual language that captivates collectors worldwide.
Zafi's art is celebrated for its fusion of traditional cubist elements with modern interpretations, and his recent achievements include a collaboration with the Roullet Cognac house to release a limited edition of the cubist carafe XO ART DE ZAFI, marking the 250th anniversary of the prestigious brand. In addition to this, Zafi’s work continues to inspire both seasoned collectors and new art enthusiasts, offering pieces that fuse powerful emotion with abstract precision. His innovative style, blending cubism with figurative motifs, has garnered widespread acclaim, and his presence at major international art fairs and auctions ensures his continued success in the competitive art market.
Throughout his artistic journey, Zafi has remained dedicated to refining his craft, overcoming personal challenges such as significant loss of vision while continuing to produce remarkable works. His resilience and commitment to his art, paired with his ever-evolving style, have made him a respected figure in contemporary art circles. Collectors around the world seek Zafi’s work for its timeless appeal and the way it modernizes a classic movement, making it a valuable addition to any art collection.
