Reinhoud - Mixed Media Portrait with painted figures
Unique mixed media work : Original painted figures on a XL Photographic Portrait, by Belgian CoBrA artist Reinhoud ( d ´ Haese). Reinhoud is captured in a joyful, candid moment.
Reinhoud reworked the image by painting over it with a playful composition of his typical whimsical, bird-like and anthropomorphic figures.
Bottom right on the mount signed by hand and dated (19)96 by the photographer Aernout Overbeeke.
Work is part of the series "Portrait of CoBrA Artists ", 1996, by Dutch photographer Aernout Overbeeke.
Originally a black-and-white photographic portrait printed on fine watercolor paper (size ca. 110 x 80 cm), the work was transformed by the artist himself in 1996 into a unique, vibrant piece.
The painted elements are closely related to the theatrical, fantastical characters that appeared throughout his sculptural work often in bronze blending elements of carnival, mythology, and satire. In this composition, they dance across the paper, forming a dynamic and humorous contrast to the photographic realism of his own smiling portrait. The result is a one-of-a-kind combination of photography and painting that reflects the vibrant imagination and mythological themes that define his oeuvre.
In 1995 Dutch photographer Aernout Overbeeke (b.1951) made a remarkable series of portraits of seventeen renowned CoBrA-artists. At a distance of three meters Overbeeke zoomed in on the hands and eyes. The portraits were printed on large-size watercolour paper.
These portraits were transformed by the CobrA-artists themselves in their own style into unique mixed-media pieces, using techniques such as watercolor, drawing, crayons and pencil. The series was exhibited at the CoBrA Museum of Modern Art in Amstelveen. Here we present one of those portraits.

Presentation
Reinhoud d'Haese is a Belgian painter and sculptor of the CoBrA movement. Born in 1928 in Geraardsbergen (Grammont, in East Flanders), he began working with a Brussels silversmith, then learned to work with metal in sculpture at La Cambre in Brussels. In 1950, he joined the Ateliers du Marais where he met the other artists of the CoBrA movement: Christian Dotremont, Pierre Alechinsky. Very inspired by insects, he developed a gallery of characters and animals in the tradition of the Caractères de La Bruyère. In all, his work includes more than 3000 sculptures, all unique, in metal, ceramic, wood or even breadcrumbs.
