Description

Conditions: Excellent condition. Subject composition is rare and we would probably attribute it to Edouard Masnet "Le déjeuner sur l'herbe, 1863" who was refused at the Paris Salon of that 1863 year.
Thomas Colman  Dibdin was an illustrator and painter. Born in Bletchworth, Surrey on October 22nd 1810. His father was the dramatist, Thomas Dibdin. His working life began in the General Post Office as a clerk, at seventeen years old. Eleven years later, at the age of 28, he left that employment to take up painting professionally. Dibdin travelled widely throughout Europe, including, France where he painted many churches and cathedrals, Germany and Belgium. Whilst there he drew the old towns and attractive buildings. Later, Dibdin invented the process of Chromo-lithography. He died in Sydenham on December 26th 1893.
He spent quite some time in the Essex area drawing and painting. He publish sketches of houses in the area and produced a watercolour of the Church in Saffron Walden.
It must have been through his time in Essex that he met the Jones Family of Saffron Walden and subsequently married Ann Alice Jones, the sister of the successful teacher Rev.William Taylor Jones. In later years TC Dibdin works for the Rev. William at Sydenham College.
