Description

With Conflicts in the Parliament (2024), artist Andres Ciccone offers a monumental composition where geometric abstraction, political tension and spatial illusion blend in a particularly dynamic visual language.

The canvas is traversed by a multitude of red and blue linear structures that appear to collide and clash within the pictorial space. This chromatic opposition symbolically evokes an ideological or institutional confrontation, directly referencing the work's title. Within this fragmented visual architecture, a whirlwind of angular forms converges on a small, stylized house located at the center of the composition—a recurring motif in Ciccone's work that alludes to notions of home, identity, and belonging.

Through this abstract scene, the artist indirectly evokes the political and social tensions that marked his country of origin, Venezuela, and which led him to leave Caracas to pursue his career between New York and Paris. The pictorial space thus becomes a metaphor for the opposing forces that shape individual and collective history.

Beneath the rigorous geometric structure, Ciccone introduces freer gestures executed in ink: diffuse traces, sketched lines, and organic textures reminiscent of fragmented writing or abstract landscapes. This layering creates a constant dialogue between order and chaos, mathematical precision and gestural spontaneity. The work is also distinguished by its materiality: the use of medium gels and relief elements lends the surface a tactile and immersive dimension, reinforcing the impression of movement and depth.

Born in Caracas in 1991, Andres Ciccone develops a pictorial practice nourished by the research of Op Art and kinetic art, which he revisits from a contemporary perspective. His compositions combine mathematical principles, such as the golden ratio, and visual disturbances that disrupt the initial order of the structure.

Her work also engages in dialogue with that of major artists such as Agnes Martin and Alice Aycock, whose influence can be seen in her interest in geometric systems, architecture, and the dynamics of movement.

Presentation

Born in Caracas in 1991, Andrés Ciccone has established himself as one of the most promising artists on the contemporary scene, a bold heir to the Venezuelan kinetic art movement. His work, at the crossroads of painting, sculpture, and installation, explores the boundaries of visual perception through dynamic and immersive geometric compositions. Trained at the Caracas Academy of Art and Design and later at the Berlin Academy of Arts, Ciccone follows in the footsteps of the great Venezuelan masters of kinetic art, such as Jesús Rafael Soto and Carlos Cruz-Diez. His international experience, spanning Berlin, Lisbon, and New York, has fostered a cosmopolitan and experimental aesthetic. He draws inspiration from the theories of optical and kinetic art, while simultaneously seeking to transcend established conventions.

Ciccone's work is characterized by the use of geometric forms, primary colors, and striking contrasts. He frequently employs black and white as a base, enhanced with red, yellow, and blue, to create effects of vibration and depth. His compositions play with the viewer's perception, offering multiple interpretations depending on the angle of view. By combining painting, sculpture, and installation, Ciccone creates three-dimensional works that challenge the traditional boundaries of art. His creations evoke trompe-l'œil, encouraging the viewer to interact physically and visually with the artwork.

Ciccone has exhibited in renowned galleries and contemporary art fairs, including those in New York, Berlin, and Miami. He participated in group exhibitions such as "Dynamic Intersections" and "Pantone Play" at the Tuleste Factory in 2021. His work is also represented by prestigious galleries such as the Mark Hachem Gallery. By perpetuating the legacy of Venezuelan kinetic art, Andrés Ciccone brings a contemporary and personal vision to this movement. His work questions perception, movement, and the interaction between the artwork and the viewer, offering an immersive and reflective artistic experience.
