Description

Marylin Cavin is a French-Swiss artist who completed her art studies in Paris, where she lived for about thirty years. For the past 25 years, she has regularly exhibited in galleries and participated in numerous contemporary art fairs and salons, earning recognition such as the Prize of the Fondation Taylor in Paris. Currently, she lives and works near Avignon in the south of France.

Drawing inspiration from her surroundings, loved ones, and public spaces, she captures photographs that serve as the foundation for composing and creating her paintings. Her recent works depict men, women, and sometimes children, often alone in a clear, abstract environment, placed in situations that reflect the contemporary world. However, her intention is not to tell a specific story. "Everything is open, possible," she says. "Each person can interpret these scenes as they wish. The canvas shows nothing beyond what we see. These people are simply there. We observe them, but in reality, it is a reflection of ourselves, the canvas is a mirror. What matters to me is capturing a moment of stillness, one that can reveal something in each of us."

Presentation

Marylin Cavin's work is based on the mental transformation of the subject taken out of its usual context, that is on the transformation of the relations between objects as we conceive them. On the surface, what we see on canvas is easy to understand, because figuration allows us to easily identify objects. There is something uncertain about the context in which they are placed though, about the bidimensional abstract background.

The canvas is actually a theatrical space where the subject is performing in another reality. The abstract background is the stage and the figurative elements perform as actors, giving a dramatic dimension to the works.

"And, as actors do, the subject transforms itself. Are the stones what they appear to be, mere stones? Somethimes they can be identified as stones, but they are actualy symbols. Are they avatars of stones? They seem rather light and in search of a certain frivolous dimension in their dramatic expression. We then become the audience of a graphic comedy."
