"The Wanderer" is a painting made of oil, acrylic, mixed media, and collage with plastic sheeting on reinforced paper. The piece is constructed from many layers of paper and plastic that combine to form a highly textured, very thick and sturdy surface. Made using a variety of media, including ink and acrylic, the final work is a rich and complex image that changes depending on the viewer's point of view, both in angle and distance: The surface tends to pulse, appearing almost animated as one moves around it, and viewing the work up close reveals hidden detail as the layers of plastic serve as a window to what lies beneath. The title of the work is somewhat in reference to this experience, on how perspective has a tendency to change as one wanders around. The custom shadowbox frame is a rustic/aged black & silver color with the piece mounted on black matte board. It sits at an approximately 1.5 inch depth behind the highest quality museum glass.
Artist Statement:
I work primarily with painting, collage, and sculpture. Playing with ideas of visual perception, I use my work to explore the break, boundary, and otherwise coexistence between imagery & the abstract, the reality of consciousness & conscious beings, and the universe at large. I'm interested in self-created manifestations of personal montage, as my relationship with each piece is very intimate; they are each like a close friend to me. My studio practice making two and three dimensional works employs a lot of assemblage and collage, building the literal objects and the conceptual narratives for each piece. There is much emphasis on recycling and using found materials, playing promiscuous artist in relation to medium and the fluidity from one to another. In the end, the works aim to be rich in their visual detail and their complexity of ideas, while still appealing to a whimsical nature, and remaining attentive to both the macro and the micro. I attended the School of Visual Arts, BFA Visual & Critical Studies, and Parsons, The New School for Design. Commissioned works are available upon request.
