Description
This piece reflects on the manipulation and exploitation of children as they are forced to witness painful realities long before they are ready. Through the presence of child brides carrying children of their own, they cradle the loss of their innocence and the gradual transformation of warmth into grief and anger. The figures sit upon a throne of weapons fashioned against their spirits, symbolizing the violence and systems that shape their lives. Surrounding them is an ever-changing camouflage of creatures, representing the shifting forces that conceal, normalize, and perpetuate harm while blurring the boundaries between survival and identity.
Presentation
Victory is a Toronto-based Nigerian multidisciplinary artist working in textile painting using gouache and acrylic.Her practice centers on portraiture, identity, and healing, drawing from diasporic knowledge systems and cultural symbolism. Through Nigerian textile motifs/patterns her work explores using art as storytelling tools for healing and self-reflection. Working primarily with gouache and acrylic to explore identity, memory, and emotional regulation , she examines how personal and collective histories are held within the body. Her practice is grounded in a trauma-informed lens founded by a background in psychology and mental health interventions.
Alongside her artistic practice, Victory has facilitated community art and wellness workshops using creative expression as a tool for connection, reflection, and care.
