Description
Presentation
E.K.Nicolaus is a German painter born in 1928 in Hamburg whose work is initially, in the 1950s, constructivist, following his master Willi Baumeister and the Bauhaus movement.
By settling in Paris in 1957, a city in full artistic effervescence, he will be confronted with informal art and tachism. There he rubbed shoulders with avant-garde artists, Hartung, Soulages, Mathieu, François Arnal, Olivier Debré and exhibited in committed galleries such as Zunini or P.Facchetti.
From 1965, Nicolaus divided his time between Paris and Cologne in Germany; he also travels to the U.S.A. and settles in 1971 and 1972 in New York, from where he brings back a new way of painting, thanks to the aerosol can. His spray gives his paintings a great cheerfulness, youth and a very contemporary burst of spontaneity.
Nicolaus is fully an artist of the new times, even a precursor, painting with the tools of his time (acrylic bombs), with his own stylistic language, in particular by the invention of the very personal theme of number, figures, so characteristic. of a civilization where science and finance triumph.
In addition to the many exhibitions in Europe, it is possible to see his works in his foundation located in Cologne.
