Artwork location: United States

This painting was inspired by a beautiful day surrounded by layers of clouds that seemed celestial in the way they were layered. I strive to create depth, atmosphere, and escape on the canvas, often with a focus on the horizon. Details giving clues about season or specific location are not as important as the emphasis on the point where earth and sky meet. And though reaching that point is never physically possible, it suggests there is always hope.

Artist Statement:

Bio:

Shawn Marshall is a Kentucky-based published artist whose work can be found in private and public collections throughout U.S. and Europe. Marshall earned a Master of Architecture with a minor in Fine Art (Sculpture) from Cornell University, and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Kentucky. She is represented by Viridian Artists in New York, NY, New Editions Gallery in Lexington, KY, and Singulart International.

Statement:

My artistic practice focuses on the natural world. Through different approaches, abstract and more representational, I explore our connection to and impact on the natural environment and its universal meanings. When working in a more representational way, the emphasis leans toward the horizon, the point where the known and unknown meet. We are always drawn to keep moving forward with hope to see what lies ahead.

My abstract work explores our impact on the environment through an overhead lens, viewed like unearthed excavations of cities and/or garden ruins, empty billboards, etc.. Though worn and rough, with imprints and patterns left from human imposition, beauty still exists. As we explore the weathered layers, we come across remnants known and unknown, man-made and natural, yet leaving us with a sense of wonder and hope about the future.

“You are the intersection of infiniteness and insignificance." Aditya Shukla
