Description
Part of my Message in a Bottle series, which explores the themes of connection, isolation and healing as inspired by 100 letters written during World War 1 by a grandfather when he was a young soldier. I never met him. Mixed media on wood panel, incorporating acrylic, graphite, and fragments of letters.
In letter after letter, he implored her to write more to take him out of the blue. I was struck by the poetry and vulnerability of this sentiment As a soldier, his hunger for connection was poignant, but also a reminder that the sense of isolation and absence of connection can befalls us at any time, such as during a pandemic or under the stresses of everyday life. I try to convey the blue of longing as well as the sunny joy derived from dreaming of the possibilities for reconnection or redemption.

Presentation
Ellen Brook creates vibrant and expressive abstract mixed media artwork. Ellen's passion for color, spontaneous gestures, marks and textiles come together in her work as visual poetry. Art is a perfect place to explore her curiosity about the human condition, the nature of the mind, and the properties of beauty and color as they relate to healing. Ellen's most recent series, "Message in a Bottle," explores the themes of longing and connection based on a box of 100 year old letters she discovered that were written by her grandfather (whom she never met) when he was a soldier in WW1.
Ellen also creates one of a kind fashion that has many of the same qualities of energy, dynamism and movement found in her visual art.
