Description

Altotype or resin-pigment photography. Alfons Alt transforms photographs taken with a camera, working on them with a brush to fix the pigments using the updated resino-pigmentype process invented in the mid-19th century by Alphonse Poitevin. The photographs are then mounted on canvas.

Alfons Alt revisits ancient photographic processes with a technique of unique prints that he has called "Altotype". The photographic process is pigmentary and not silver. He chooses the subjects behind his camera and then works on his prints as a chemist, engraver or painter.
He chooses the parts of the subject that he wants to make disappear or highlight. The subtlety and strength of the pigments combined with the mysterious effects of drying make each work mysterious and poetic.

Alfons Alt's "Mont Boros Palm" is a vegetal incandescence, where photographic material melts into a pictorial explosion. This work brings forth an inner jungle, saturated with reds, oranges and yellows, as if traversed by a primitive heat. The palms, multiplied and superimposed, become vectors of energy, solar imprints. Alfons Alt does not represent light: he prints it, engraves it, makes it vibrate in every layer of the image.

Presentation

Born in 1962 in Illertissen, Alfons Alt is a German artist.

Alfons Alt grew up in a family of cabinetmaking-craftsmen, which lead him to develop a taste for art right from his childhood. He settled down in France during mid 80's and became a Freelance photographer. He collaborated with the world of edition and visual arts. This is when he began a training with Jean-Pierre and Claudine Sudre, then with Jordi Guillumet in Barcelona.

In 1993, Alfons Alt founded his experimental gallery in Marseille. When he joined the Fiche de la Belle de Mai residency, he devoted himself to creating alternative techniques.

He has had a genuine interest for the world of edition, Alfons Alt wrote many books, two of which received the European Publisher's Award for Photography. His art work has been displayed in several European galleries and in Egypt since the 90's. Many of them were acquired by several solo and public collections like FRAC Basse Normandie, le Centre mondial de la Paix in Verdun and the Musée d'Aurillac.
