Description
This artistic collage is a captivating work that masterfully combines the classicism of romantic landscapes with the modernity of photographic portraiture. The composition is divided into two distinct but harmoniously integrated parts. On the left, an idyllic pastoral scene, bathed in soft light, evokes a bucolic and timeless atmosphere. The majestic trees stretch toward the sky, their branches forming an intricate network of lines and shadows. The transition between nature and portrait is fluid and disconcerting. Indeed, the right part of the painting presents Joan Crawford whose black and white face, serene and melancholic, is partly masked by the forest which seems to emerge by itself. This striking contrast between the vibrant landscape and the calm of the female face creates a fascinating duality and intense psychological depth. The artist plays here with the spectator's perceptions, blurring the boundaries between reality and imagination. The superposition of natural and human elements suggests a deep reflection on the interrelation between man and nature, as well as on dreams and reality. This work is not just a simple collage; it is a visual and emotional exploration that incites reflection and wonder. With this work, the artist succeeds in creating a perfect symbiosis between two worlds, and invites the viewer to marvel at the complexity and beauty of this aesthetic union.
From the Hollywood Drama Queens series where Hollywood stars are placed against a dramatic background. Words and parts of ancient letters are added to the composition. The portrait of Joan Crawford is an excerpt from Film Star Portraits of the Fifties, a vintage book by John Kobal. The photo, from 1955, was taken by Robert Koburn for Columbia Pictures. The image is juxtaposed with an illustration from a work by Adam Pynacker.
(The artwork comes with velcro for framing. The frame is INCLUDED free of charge for orders within the European Union. The white box frame measures 25 x 25 cm / 10' x 10'.)
Presentation
Born in Rotterdam in 1962, Marian Williams lives and works in France.
Although art is all around within the family, Marian choses to take various detours in life to finally arrive at her true passion.
After studying physical education and physiology she specialises in management of sport events. A career that continues after arriving in France in 1987, as managing director of a New York based design company.
Her passion for art, graphics and images never left her and in 2010 she definitely turns towards collage, painting and sculpting.
Since, her work has been on show in France, England, Italy, Albania, the Netherlands, Serbia and in the USA.
Whilst recycling objects, authentic photos and original illustrations from vintage magazines and books, dating from 1900, she creates dynamic, striking and colourful analog compositions.
The artist's approach to collage is rich and large; from different angles, formats and styles; on paper, canvas, mosaics or as sculptures.
The mixed media compositions are created with paper, ink, pastels, acrylic and oil paint.
Printed material is cut, ripped or torn and sometimes used as ink transfers.
The 'recycle art' sculptures are installations and compositions made out of vintage three-dimensional elements.
The works, influenced by pop art, surrealism and dadaism, show originality and freshness, in which classical art, retro chic, and kitsch are combined in a challenging way.
The artist's political engagement for the environment, women's rights, freedom and social justice, are recurring themes.
Her story telling is sincere, expressed in various ways, sometimes minimalist, sometimes complex.
“ Collage for me it is the most enjoyable and accurate form of expression.
It is story telling; transforming images that are charged with concepts and ideas into new compositions.
With my compositions I hope to make the viewers question what is normal and expected.
I was born in a free country and raised in an eccentric family who fought for equal rights, emancipation and social justice.
I hope to be a source of inspiration to think independently and question society."
