Description
Litv 1046
"Defenders of Ukraine" by renowned Ukrainian artist Daniil Litvinov is a powerful allegorical painting that merges history, tradition, and the painful present into a single, emotionally charged image. At its heart, a woman dressed in traditional Ukrainian attire holds a child close, symbolizing the nation's maternal strength and cultural identity. Behind her looms an icon of the Virgin Mary, representing spiritual resilience and divine protection. On one side, a historical Cossack warrior stands firm, echoing Ukraine's centuries-old struggle for freedom. On the other, a modern soldier in combat gear, weapon raised, guards against the threat of current war — a stark contrast between eras but a shared purpose: defense of the homeland. Beneath them lie the casualties of aggression — fallen bodies, a pierced heart, and a broken bandura, symbolizing the wounds to both people and culture. Litvinov's message is clear: the fight for Ukraine is both ancient and ongoing. Through this composition, he honors all who defend its soul — past and present — and emphasizes the cost of freedom, the depth of loss, and the unyielding will to survive.
