Description
Litv 389
"Ivan Sirko in France" by Oleg Litvinov is a vivid, theatrical reimagining of history through anachronism and satire. The painting places the legendary Ukrainian Cossack commander Ivan Sirko — known for his cunning and martial prowess — in an unlikely context: amidst European knights and Renaissance soldiers, possibly during a fictitious campaign in France. At the center, Sirko rides a proud white horse, donned in ornate armor and a red cloak, holding a mace — a symbol of Cossack authority. Around him unfolds a chaotic battlefield: fallen and wounded soldiers, men with bandaged eyes, figures pleading or praying, and an angelic female figure above, blowing a trumpet like a herald of war or judgment. Behind them, a medieval tower crumbles, symbolizing either conquest or the fall of old power. What the artist expresses: Litvinov uses the fantasy of Sirko in France as a metaphor for the transcendence of Ukrainian spirit and warrior identity — inserting a Ukrainian hero into the heart of Western Europe's military tradition. The work is rich in symbolism: the angel may represent divine mission or national pride, while the blindfolded and dying soldiers evoke the brutality and cost of glory. It also plays with myth-making, merging legend with Western iconography, suggesting that Ukrainian valor belongs not only to the steppe but to the grand stage of European history. In essence, this painting is a mythological celebration and a political statement, asserting Ukraine's historic strength and the enduring power of its cultural heroes, even on foreign soil.

Litvinov's paintings primarily focus on biblical, mythological, and historical themes. Using brushes and paints, he narrates the eternal passions and agonies to which humanity is condemned: envy, temptation, fear, but also tenderness, affection, and the warmth of maternal love. As a skilled artist, Litvinov's portraits of contemporaries in the settings of past eras appear natural, each character fitting appropriately into the interior and costumes.
With great skill and professionalism, Oleg paints multifigure compositions, depicting scenes from ancient tales and myths. A master of painting, artist Oleg Litvinov is always in creative exploration. Although his priority lies in depicting multifigure subjects in mythological, historical, and religious themes, captivating landscapes of his native region also deeply move his soul. These places, filled with beauty and harmony, were where his childhood and youth passed. Here, he painted his first canvases and created his early sketches. In the groves near the lovely Sula River, art continues to be born, as Oleg Arkadyevich works on his pieces daily.
