Gond Tribe
This captivating work of art features four brightly colored animals, painted in a distinctive tribal style. Each creature sports an intricate pattern of geometric and undulating patterns, creating an almost hypnotic texture. The blue animal is enhanced with green touches around the face, while orange and pink appear with vibrant hues, contrasting with the dark background. Vivid expressions and visible teeth add a dimension of vivacity and dynamism. The repetition of patterns evokes movement and harmony, while the bold mix of colors symbolizes diversity and creativity. This painting embodies a unique fusion of folklore and modernity, inviting the viewer to explore an imaginary encounter between nature and art.
Presentation
Santoshi (Tekam) Shyam started drawing at the age of six. On Sunday afternoons, she would sit between her parents, Narmada Tekam and Rambai, and draw sketches of animals and trees, which she would compare with her parent's paintings. The main motif in her work is nature in all its aspects. Tigers and crocodiles predominate. Certain rituals also influenced her a lot, like Mauni Upvas, in which the person who fasts must stay absolutely silent (mouni) like a cow and cross under a cow seven times. Santoshi saw the ritual being performed in the village once and was fascinated. Since then it has become another recurring motif of her painting.
