Description
“Mustang" features a horse intricately adorned with vibrant, swirling red patterns that cover its entire visage, merging seamlessly with the blue floral background. The artist skillfully blends shades of turquoise and soft blues, creating a tranquil yet dynamic backdrop adorned with white lilies and delicate blossoms. The horse's mane, a striking shade of fiery orange, adds a dramatic contrast, emphasizing the animal's dignified presence. The patterns on the horse resemble ornate filigree, suggesting a fusion of nature and art. This piece uniquely combines natural beauty with abstract design, creating a mesmerizing harmony of color and form. The overall composition exudes an ethereal quality, drawing the viewer into its enchanting world where nature and imagination coalesce.
Presentation
The American artist Augustina Droze (b. 1981) employs animals as symbolic narrators of her personal experience. Her work reflects life as a foreigner and mother, framing the world as at once exotic, beautiful, and bewildering. Based in Beijing for the past decade, she fuses Eastern and Western elements into vibrant paintings and installations marked by Rococo-inspired abundance. These immersive works form a modern mythology—dreamlike landscapes alive with symbolism and contradiction.
Droze's art has been exhibited widely, including the Castellani Art Museum (2014), Banaras Hindu University as a Fulbright Senior Scholar (2017), the U.S. Embassy Beijing American Center as a Distinguished Artist Envoy (2022), the London Biennale (2023), the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum (2024), and the Carrousel du Louvre (2025). In addition to her studio practice, she has completed major public art projects worldwide, with commissions from Forbes Company, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Tucson Pima Arts Council, and Nagpur International Airport, among others.
