Description
This intriguing artwork depicts a human walking a tightrope, symbolically dividing two contrasting worlds: a dimly lit cityscape on the left and a newspaper page on the right. The man, adorned only in a white cloth, illustrates balance and vulnerability as he navigates this precarious path. The city below is shadowy and indistinct, suggesting anonymity and perhaps chaos. In stark contrast, the newspaper side is filled with text, embodying information, media, or societal issues. The rope serves as a literal and metaphorical boundary, with the man representing the human condition, caught between the chaos of urban life and the structured, often scrutinizing, gaze of the media. This artwork powerfully captures the tension and duality faced in contemporary existence, engaging viewers to ponder the balance we strive for amidst external pressures.
Presentation
Dekel Harari is a contemporary mixed-media artist, his practice explores routine, repetition, information overload, and the moment when habit takes control and the mind stops questioning. Newspapers are his primary material. Not because of their content, and not because they are free, but because of their physical presence — their texture, weight, fragility, and the quiet familiarity of the object itself. He changes their function. Instead of reading them and discarding them, he cuts them, paints over them, and constructs with them. Sometimes, they even re-enter circulation as artworks. The question, for him, is not simply what we do, but when an action ceases to be automatic and becomes a conscious choice. And what else might shift, if we paused long enough to actually think
