Note of intent — Looking To The Future
“Looking To The Future" combines portraiture and lettering in a unique relationship of equivalence. ZURIK herself explains the principle: “I like the idea of combining portraits and letters, with hair serving as a common thread, making each element the main focus. The letters don't accompany the character, nor the character the letters; both are of equal importance." This parity is not rhetorical: it is formal, visible, and constitutive of the composition.
“Looking To The Future" is also more than a self-portrait or a stylistic exercise: it is a formal and philosophical proposition on what it might mean to “look to the future"—with eyes open, curiosity intact, and style as a compass. ZURIK describes herself as someone “forward-looking, both in my personal life and in my work," driven by a “constant need to explore."
Portraiture in Graffiti: A Subversion of the Established Order
In the history of graffiti, the human figure has long remained secondary—decoration, accessory, a peripheral character serving the name. ZURIK overturns this hierarchy: the portrait and the letter mutually generate each other, the character's hair becoming the very material of the lettering, or vice versa. This fusion is a formal contribution to the language of graffiti, an expansion of its expressive possibilities.
The combined use of spray paint and airbrush in "Looking To The Future" speaks volumes about ZURIK's technical sophistication: the airbrush, a precision tool used in illustration and model making, is employed here for facial details and skin tone nuances, while the spray paint builds up the volumes and effects of the lettering. This hybridization of tools is consistent with an approach that rejects the boundaries between disciplines.
Trajectory of an international artist
ZURIK was born in 1990 in Bogotá, Colombia, and moved to Barcelona in 2016, where she has resided ever since. Her work has been exhibited in numerous countries—including Australia, France, Germany, the United States, Italy, Portugal, and Mexico—and at prestigious festivals such as the Roskilde Festival (Denmark), the Yardworks Festival (Scotland), and the Gargar Festival (Spain). Her collaborations include brands like Converse, Coca-Cola, Sephora, Seat, Montana Colors, Hasbro, and EA (Need for Speed).
Her work has been featured in major publications: "Women Street Artists of Latin America: Art Without Fear" (Sjakoo, 2023), "World Atlas of Street Art" (Rafael Schacter and Lachlan MacDowall, Lunwerg, 2022), and "TRAMONTANA #5" (Montana Colors, 2021). These references place her firmly on the international map of important graffiti and urban art artists.
Institutional links
In 2021, ZURIK's work "Eye Contact" entered the permanent collection of the STRAAT Museum in Amsterdam, one of the world's leading museums for urban art, founded in the former NDSM workshops and now housing one of the most important indoor collections of street art. This inclusion in the permanent institutional collection recognizes an artistic approach that transcends the boundaries of graffiti to enter the broader field of contemporary art.
Formal analysis
In the 100 × 100 cm square format, the composition of "Looking To The Future" is organized around a central axis—the face—from which the lettering and hair radiate. The symmetry is not perfect, and it is this slight asymmetry that gives the piece its vibrant character. The figure's gaze—directed toward something off-screen, toward the "future" of the title—creates a tension between the space of the canvas and the imagined space beyond.
The coexistence of spray paint and airbrush creates two distinct visual textures that interact without contradicting each other: the textural effects of the spray paint in the lettering and backgrounds contrast with the smooth transitions of the airbrush in the rendering of the face. This controlled heterogeneity is one of the most interesting characteristics of the work.

From the beginning, his work focused on the construction of works with an organic and geometric style, without losing sight of the structure of the letters, the essence of Graffiti.
Exploring different formats over time, she has added figurative elements to her compositions, which she defines as stemming from the “wild" style. This combination allows her to present works that respect the codes of Graffiti and are at the same time understandable by a wide audience.
Originally from Colombia and living in Spain since 2009, ZURIK has gained notoriety through his unique style and the rigor of his work.
