Between Two Tomorrows is a visual reflection on the interrupted journey of adolescence: a life paused, reshaped, and reborn too soon. The painting portrays a young woman duplicated in form yet divided in direction, symbolizing the moment an adolescent girl becomes a mother before her childhood fully unfolds. The two figures stand back-to-back, eyes gently closed, suspended between who she was and who she must now become. The contrasting headwraps and garments, red and blue, represent conflicting emotions: fear and courage, loss and hope, vulnerability and resilience. The warm yellow background evokes both exposure and visibility, echoing how adolescent mothers are often placed in the public eye while remaining unheard. 

This artwork draws from the lived reality of many Tanzanian adolescent mothers whose education, dreams, and identities are abruptly interrupted by early pregnancy. Yet it does not frame motherhood as an end but as a complex turning point. One figure carries the weight of stigma, judgment, and unfinished girlhood; the other embodies strength, adaptation, and the quiet determination to rebuild a future for herself and her child.

What happens when a girl is forced to grow up before she is ready?
