Description
Oil on cardboard
A haunting study of form and atmosphere. This oil painting captures a solitary vase emerging from a deep, moody void. The brushwork is restless. Swift strokes create a sense of urgent movement. Muted tones of charcoal and slate dominate the palette. Soft hints of mauve and ochre break through the gloom.
The artist explores the delicate boundary between observation and memory. The object loses its hard edges. It blends into the surrounding space through a process of continuous experimentation. Light clings to the curve of the vessel. It provides a focal point amidst the swirling textures.
This artwork references the vanity tradition. It meditates on time and the fragility of presence. The composition feels both weighted and ephemeral. It reflects a contemporary Georgian perspective on classical still life. The surface is layered. Thick applications of paint contrast with translucent glazes. The resulting image is an emotional landscape of solitude and introspection. Every gesture reveals a tension between tradition and modern visual language. The scene settles into a somber harmony of shadow and light.
Presentation
Ilia Menabde is a Georgian painter born in 2003 who lives and works in Tbilisi, Georgia. His practice explores the relationship between memory, time, place, and contemporary experience. He graduated from the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts in 2026 and currently works from a temporary studio in Tbilisi. Working primarily with oil on canvas, Menabde approaches painting as an evolving process of experimentation. His practice draws upon diverse historical periods, visual references, and the environments that surround him, which he reinterprets through a personal and contemporary language. Rather than adhering to a single stylistic approach, he continuously explores new techniques, compositions, textures, and ways of constructing the painted image. Menabde’s work reflects the perspective of a young artist navigating the tension between inherited artistic traditions and the rapidly changing visual culture of the present. His paintings combine observation, imagination, and experimentation, creating spaces in which different temporal and emotional references can coexist. He has participated in several group exhibitions in Tbilisi, and his works are held in private collections.
