Description
The gaze is immediate. An animal face stands out against a segmented background. The thick, assured white line outlines the contours of a sheep. This motif constantly returns in the artist's work. It evokes a raw innocence.
The composition plays on stark chromatic contrasts. The solar yellow opposes the deep blue. Red and green punctuate the space. Each color area acts as an architectural block. The acrylic planes are applied with frankness.
The animal occupies the center of the canvas. Its black eyes, simple and fixed, create a direct link with the viewer. The style oscillates between geometric abstraction and instinctive figuration. The whole exudes an almost solemn serenity.
This painting dates from 1990. It testifies to a constant search for form and color. The signature appears in the bottom left, integrated into the pink and blue shades. The work rests on a fragile balance between simplicity and symbolic depth.
Presentation
Menashe Kadishman (1932–2015) was an influential Israeli painter and sculptor known for his unique artistic vision that blended minimalist influences with deeply symbolic themes. Born in Tel Aviv, he studied sculpture under Moshe Sternschuss and Rudi Lehmann before moving to London in 1959. There, he immersed himself in the minimalist art movement and formed connections with artists such as Anthony Caro. His first major exhibition took place at the Grosvenor Gallery, marking the beginning of an international career.
Kadishman’s early experiences as a shepherd in a kibbutz during the 1950s had a profound impact on his art. This connection to nature and animals became a defining element of his work, culminating in his 1978 Venice Biennale installation, where he famously presented a flock of painted sheep. This theme remained central throughout his career, with his expressive depictions of sheep becoming his signature motif. In the 1990s, Kadishman also created powerful works for the Jewish Museum in Berlin, addressing themes of memory, loss, and the victims of war and violence, particularly in reference to the Holocaust. His contributions to Israeli art were recognized in 1995 when he received the prestigious Israel Prize.
Kadishman’s legacy continues to thrive in the global art scene. His works remain highly sought after by collectors, and his sculptures and paintings are frequently displayed in major museums and exhibitions worldwide. Recent retrospectives have revisited his impact on contemporary sculpture and painting, shedding new light on his innovative use of color and form. His sheep paintings, in particular, continue to resonate with audiences, symbolizing themes of sacrifice, innocence, and collective memory. His public sculptures, many of which stand in Israel and beyond, remain lasting testaments to his artistic and cultural influence.
