Description
This acrylic painting captivates with its frontal gaze. The animal occupies the center of the composition. Its face unfolds in a bold palette. Green dominates the top of the head. Touches of blue come to highlight the contours.
The background fragments into blocks of primary colors. A bright yellow illuminates the background. A deep red saturates the left part. An intense blue closes the composition on the right.
The brushstroke is frank. The material is applied generously. The artist plays with chromatic contrasts to give relief to the subject. The animal figure becomes a symbol of innocence here.
Created in 1990, this work is part of a research on form and color. The portrait stands out strongly against an abstract background. The artist's signature appears discreetly in the bottom right.
Presentation
Menashe Kadishman (1932–2015) was an influential Israeli painter and sculptor known for his unique artistic vision that blended minimalist influences with deeply symbolic themes. Born in Tel Aviv, he studied sculpture under Moshe Sternschuss and Rudi Lehmann before moving to London in 1959. There, he immersed himself in the minimalist art movement and formed connections with artists such as Anthony Caro. His first major exhibition took place at the Grosvenor Gallery, marking the beginning of an international career.
Kadishman’s early experiences as a shepherd in a kibbutz during the 1950s had a profound impact on his art. This connection to nature and animals became a defining element of his work, culminating in his 1978 Venice Biennale installation, where he famously presented a flock of painted sheep. This theme remained central throughout his career, with his expressive depictions of sheep becoming his signature motif. In the 1990s, Kadishman also created powerful works for the Jewish Museum in Berlin, addressing themes of memory, loss, and the victims of war and violence, particularly in reference to the Holocaust. His contributions to Israeli art were recognized in 1995 when he received the prestigious Israel Prize.
Kadishman’s legacy continues to thrive in the global art scene. His works remain highly sought after by collectors, and his sculptures and paintings are frequently displayed in major museums and exhibitions worldwide. Recent retrospectives have revisited his impact on contemporary sculpture and painting, shedding new light on his innovative use of color and form. His sheep paintings, in particular, continue to resonate with audiences, symbolizing themes of sacrifice, innocence, and collective memory. His public sculptures, many of which stand in Israel and beyond, remain lasting testaments to his artistic and cultural influence.
