Description

A turquoise centre, imagined as a portal of creation.

In The Divine Singularity, Yusa Widiana concentrates his reflection on origin within a central circular form. Turquoise, thick impasto and cracked gold leaf give this symbolic centre a tactile presence, connecting the immensity of its subject with the intimate experience of a painted surface.

The artist calls the circle Puser Jagat—the navel of the universe. In his interpretation, it becomes a point of emergence, the portal through which creation is imagined.

Material plays an essential role in this encounter. The impasto establishes volume, while the fractured gold leaf introduces fine divisions and reflective passages. These details invite the viewer to approach the work and discover the physical construction of its centre.

Turquoise provides the circle's chromatic identity. Alongside gold, it creates a meeting between colour and light, giving the central form a presence that shifts with the conditions of viewing.

Within the Kitab Alam series, The Divine Singularity continues Widiana's exploration of nature through symbolic forms. Here, the idea of a universal origin takes shape through the artist's handling of matter: pigment acquires depth, gold reveals its fractures, and the circle becomes a place for contemplation.

Presentation

Yusa Widiana is an Indonesian contemporary artist whose practice connects painting, cultural identity and community life. Born in 1971 in Purwakarta, he lives and works in Tasikmalaya, West Java. He holds a degree in Fine Arts Education from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), Bandung.

Working in oil, watercolor and mixed media, as well as murals, Widiana explores the meeting of local heritage and contemporary urban experience. Hybrid identity is central to his approach: the ways traditions, places and everyday encounters shape who we become.

His movement between studio painting and public art allows him to explore different relationships with the viewer. A painting invites a personal encounter; a mural enters a space shared by many. Across these formats, his work maintains a close connection with the communities and cultural environments around him.

His solo exhibitions include Babak Baru, GLOCAL, Nature and Gotong Royong Reborn. He has also participated in group exhibitions in Germany, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, China and the United Arab Emirates, alongside numerous presentations in Indonesia.

His national exhibition history includes Galeri Soemardja, Galeri Popo Iskandar, Galeri Nasional Indonesia and Bentara Budaya, Yogyakarta. He received second place in a West Java provincial painting competition and contributed to teams awarded first place in regional mural competitions.

Widiana's practice offers an evolving conversation between individual expression and shared experience, bringing Indonesian cultural perspectives into a broader contemporary dialogue.
