Description

This acrylic painting captures a suspended moment in a stripped-down urban setting. A white van is parked in front of a building with ochre walls, under a deep blue sky. The composition plays on marked chromatic contrasts. The harsh light highlights the grainy texture of the paint.
The visual narrative evokes travel and uncertainty. The vehicle becomes the symbol of a departure or a prolonged wait. Each brushstroke translates a reflection on exile and belonging. The artist transforms a fragment of daily life into a meditation on displacement.
The architectural structure, massive and simplified, anchors the scene in a tangible reality. The shades of yellow and brown contrast with the coldness of the upper blue. The pictorial surface reveals successive layers, suggesting reconstruction and memory. This 2024 work is part of a conceptual approach where the landscape becomes the mirror of a personal and collective history. The gaze finally rests on the shadows stretched on the ground.

Mohammed Joha, Where Shall We Go No.2

Mohammed Joha

Palestine  • 1978

Presentation

Mohammed Joha is a Palestinian multidisciplinary artist whose practice encompasses painting, drawing, collage, installation, photography, and video. Working with materials such as paper, cardboard, fabric, and found objects, he creates layered compositions that combine abstraction with personal narratives. His work is shaped by memories of Gaza and his experience of living between Palestine and France, exploring themes of distance, displacement, belonging, and the changing relationship to place.

Born in Gaza in 1978, Joha received his bachelor’s degree from Al-Aqsa University in Gaza in 2003. He has since received several awards and participated in international artist residencies, contributing to the development of his artistic practice. Rather than directly documenting political events, Joha transforms fragments of everyday life into poetic reflections on loss, resilience, and memory. His recent paintings and collages respond to the devastation and displacement experienced in Gaza, where the process of assembling and reconstructing materials becomes a way of reflecting on rebuilding and renewal. The artist currently lives and works in Marseille, France, where he continues to develop his artistic practice.
