Metropolitan Rhythm, 2023

Zakhar Shevchuk

Metropolitan Rhythm captures the essence of the modern city not through direct depiction, but through atmosphere, texture, and emotional resonance. The composition evokes an urban landscape seen through memory rather than observation – blurred structures, softened edges, and architectural hints emerging from a layered, almost weathered surface. The restrained palette of greys and muted earth tones enhances the sense of quiet tension, making the work both sophisticated and highly versatile for contemporary interiors.

One of the most compelling aspects of this painting is its physical presence. The surface is richly textured, with visible traces of scraping, layering, and reworking that give the work depth and authenticity. These tactile qualities echo the visual language of artists such as Antoni Tàpies, while the atmospheric abstraction aligns with the broader European tradition of post-war material painting. The result is a piece that feels both timeless and distinctly contemporary.

This is a work that rewards long-term engagement. From a distance, it reads as a calm, minimalist composition; up close, it reveals complexity, movement, and subtle color variations. Metropolitan Rhythm is particularly well-suited for collectors seeking refined, intellectually grounded abstraction with strong decorative and spatial impact – an artwork that anchors a space without overwhelming it.
