Description

Mixed media on canvas. An abstract, vertically oriented composition built on the contrast between rigid geometry and painterly sfumato. The color palette is grounded in deep tones of ultramarine, indigo, and emerald green. Dominating the left side of the canvas is a thin white vertical line that forms a sharp spatial boundary. The central field features a collaged element with a pronounced mesh texture, layered with glazes containing a metallic pigment. A localized golden accent rests near the top along the central axis.

The work explores the boundaries between structure and chaos, physical materiality, and illusory space. Incorporating the collage texture (mesh/fabric) breaks the two-dimensionality of the pictorial plane, turning the canvas into a three-dimensional object. The vertical lines serve as architectural wings, organizing the space and directing the eye toward the textured center. The composition touches upon themes of memory, hidden knowledge, and the search for light within a monochromatic environment.

Presentation

From Opera to Painting

Walter dedicated a large part of his professional life to the performing arts, working for nearly 40 years at the Dutch National Opera. His experience as a producer, stage director, and designer of sets, costumes, and lighting has shaped his singular artistic vision.

This theatrical "lens" is clearly reflected in his paintings: Francia masterfully constructs composition and atmosphere, utilizing the dramaturgy of light and shadow characteristic of the grand stage. However, despite his success in the theater, painting has always remained his "red line"—a vital constant and his most personal medium of expression.

Artistic Philosophy In his works, the artist explores themes such as silence, presence, and inner energy. His style oscillates between abstraction and the figurative, inviting the viewer on a "journey into the unknown." For Francia, art is a space where words give way to intuition, and contemplation becomes a form of dialogue.

Recognition and Current Work Currently, Walter Francia lives and works in Andalusia, Spain, where he also serves as the curator of the cultural space Nave 91 (Archidona). His work is held in private and corporate collections in more than 20 countries, including the Netherlands, the United States, and Spain.
