Description
Rudolph Valentino by Paloma Castello, 2018. Edition of 1/3 + 1 AP. Digital photographs on glossy pearlescent paper. Additional sizes and prints are available: Small edition 27.5 x 19.6 inches Edition of 1/3 + 1 AP. .
This artwork is a strikingly imaginative composition that melds classic elegance with surreal elements. At the center, a figure in a tailored, vintage-style suit exudes charisma and poise, a testament to timeless fashion. The light gray ensemble, complete with a perfectly knotted tie and pocket square, suggests a bygone era of sophistication and attention to detail. Bringing an unexpected twist to this scene is the unconventional addition of a vibrant feather, which obscures the figure's eyes. This feather, a blend of deep blue and rich bronze hues, introduces an element of mystery and surrealism, inviting viewers to explore themes of identity and disguise. It challenges the onlooker to consider the intersection of reality and imagination, adding a layer of intrigue to the piece. The subject is captured mid-action, holding a cigar with nonchalant confidence, further emphasizing their composed demeanor. This juxtaposition of classic attire and enigmatic motifs is rendered in monochromatic tones, punctuated by the vivid feather, creating a visually captivating contrast. The artwork’s ability to blend traditional aesthetics with avant-garde elements makes it uniquely captivating. It evokes curiosity and encourages a deeper exploration of the narrative behind the obscured visage, leaving a lasting impression on the viewer.
Presentation
Paloma Castello was born in 1988, Bogotá, Colombia.
I use my work to bring life or a different narrative to an object's past. I'm interested in playing with memory and relating it to the present, creating an atmosphere between reality and fiction. My family and social background have a powerful influence on my work. I grew up surrounded with objects and anecdotes inherited from my ancestors that inspire endless surreal stories. My work emerges from these experiences; they are evidence of my “auto-fiction".
"Paloma Castello presents to us a nostalgia-filled body of work. The collection represents the soul of her proposal: inherited objects discovered or found that have become the tip of the iceberg of her past. These are elements she collects, recollects and then classifies following a method that frames her anachronic attitude that proves as evidence of the youth of her art.
She also demonstrates that the experimentations on herself are common in an artist who's just beginning her career. Without a doubt, this resource, valid and true becomes the road that determines the experimental character of the author.
Castelloland works with objects whose uniqueness proves to be fundamental to the piece's narrative in each story because each piece reacts and happens through the word and object interaction. This series is composed by more than 30 small format photographs and the stories that are linked to them that sway between fiction and reality."
