Description
This very delicate lithograph by Léonor Fini has only been printed 55 copies. This one bears the number 39 and was produced on Japanese paper. Hand signed lower right in pencil by the artist. The frame is made of aluminum (see last photo).
Presentation
Leonor Fini (1908–1996) was a celebrated Argentinean artist of Italian origin, known for her captivating surrealist paintings. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and raised in Italy, Fini was exposed to an environment rich in art and culture, which significantly influenced her creative path. She began painting at the age of 17 and soon moved to Milan to pursue her passion for art.
In 1937, Fini relocated to Paris, where she became part of the surrealist movement, befriending prominent figures like André Breton, Georges Bataille, Max Ernst, Paul Éluard, and Victor Brauner. Her involvement with these influential artists deeply shaped her approach to painting, and she explored the surrealist theories and concepts that dominated the period.
Throughout her career, Leonor Fini maintained her artistic independence, delving into diverse themes such as eroticism, youth, cruelty, and celebration. Her art primarily focused on women, portraying them as both seductive enchantresses and angelic priestesses. The sensual and mysterious qualities of her female subjects made her works deeply impactful and alluring.
Fini's talent extended beyond painting, as she worked as a costume designer and decorator for various theatrical productions. She also created numerous portraits of friends and famous personalities, further solidifying her influence in both the art and cultural communities.
Over the course of her career, Leonor Fini participated in more than 45 solo and group exhibitions across Europe. Her unique style and powerful portrayal of female figures inspired poets, writers, and filmmakers, with nine films dedicated to her life and work.
Leonor Fini passed away in 1996 in the Paris region, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the surrealist movement. Her contributions to art, particularly her exploration of gender, identity, and sensuality, continue to captivate audiences worldwide.
