Artwork location: France

We have conceived two limited editions of the book Sasuke by Masahisa Fukase, numbered each from 1 to 30, including the book and a choice between two collotype prints produced by Benrido studio in Kyoto on Torinoko White Washi paper.

The publication Sasuke gathers the photographs Masahisa Fukase has made of his cats, Sasuke and Momoe, presenting both iconic images and a selection of unpublished ones. His cats have become a major theme in his work, particularly at the end of the 1970’s, and represent a boundless experimental field for the Japanese photographer, among the most radical and original of his generation. They have been the subjects of several books in his lifetime and Tomo Kosuga has unburied a remarkable selection in the artist’s archive to conceive this book as the achievement of a series of publications dedicated to his cats.

Collotype, a printing process developed in France approximately 150 years ago, allows a continuous tone process and a smooth rendering. The prints of remarkable quality are also very stable. Today, Benrido in Kyoto is one of the last workshops in the world to maintain and develop this traditional process.

Limited edition in a box set,
numbered from 1 to 30,
including the book Sasuke
with the collotype print (on opposite side),
produced by Benrido studio, Kyoto
and certified with the authentification stamp
of the Masahisa Fukase Archives.

Masahisa Fukase

Japan  • 1934

Born in 1934 on the island of Hokkaido, in northern Japan, into a family of studio photographers, Masahisa Fukase should have taken over his parents' business but, after studying photography, he began a career as a freelance reporter. launched at the end of the 1960s. First for magazines and in the field of advertising, before embarking on a more intimate work. It was in 1971 that he published his first album of photographs, devoted to his family, through group portraits. In 1974, he co-founded the Workshop Photography School with Shomei Tomatsu, Eikoh Hosoe, Noriaki Yokosuka, Nobuyoshi Araki and Daido Moriyama. The New York MoMa dedicates a landmark exhibition to them that same year: “New Japanese Photography”. But it is the book The Solitude of Ravens, released in 1986, which will reveal Fukase with these hallucinating and hallucinating images of crows, work undertaken following his divorce from Yoko, his second wife. “I am becoming a raven”, even wrote its author, about this famous series in the history of photography. Victim in 1992 of a fall on the stairs of his favorite bar and fell into a coma, 58-year-old Masahisa Fukase will be kept in intensive care until his death in 2012.
