Description
This monochromatic artwork portrays a figure seated with a contemplative expression. Rendered in bold, dynamic brushstrokes, the composition captures an evocative blend of texture and shadow. The figure's downward gaze and relaxed posture evoke introspection, enhanced by the deep contrast between light and dark tones. The blurred edges and soft gradients create a dreamlike atmosphere, leaving the background deliberately ambiguous. The application of paint emphasizes the fluidity of form and movement, showcasing the artist's mastery in capturing emotion through abstraction. This piece stands out due to its minimalist palette and expressive technique, inviting viewers to explore its depth and narrative.
Elizabeth Peyton, one of the most recognized artists of her generation derived her lithograph Colin from her 1998 full-color portrait titled "Silver Colin". She transforms color into the graphic, placing the viewer in a new visual relationship between portraitist and sitter. Published in a small edition of only 30 copies, this portrait of Colin de Land, a New York art dealer.
Presentation
Born in 1965 in Danbury, Connecticut, Elizabeth Peyton went on to study at the School of Visual Arts. In 1993, she held a solo show of drawings in room 828 of the historic Chelsea Hotel, launching her career in the art world. By her second solo exhibition in 1995 at Gavin Brown's enterprise, she had achieved widespread acclaim, and has held major exhibitions ever since.
Peyton is a contemporary American painter best known for her intimate, small-scale portraits of celebrities, friends, and historical figures. Characterized by transparent washes of pigment, Peyton's paintings address notions of idolization and obsession. Notable figures she has painted include Kurt Cobain, Barack Obama, and David Bowie. Peyton has chosen New York as her home and place of work.
