This timeless work of art captivates attention with its apparent simplicity and subtle depth. Titled “Two Circles Intersecting," it is a masterful example of minimalism and abstraction. The painting is characterized by a bold contrast between a dark background and a luminous central form. The background, done in a deep shade of blue, seems almost mystical, evoking the vastness of the universe or the depth of the ocean. The texture of this area is undeniably rich, with a gradation of color that creates an effect of movement, despite its apparent stillness. In the center, two circles gracefully overlap, forming a pristine white space at the point of convergence. The circles, one blue and the other pastel pink, symbolize duality and harmony, the union of opposing polarities. This interplay of circles is rendered with mathematical precision, suggesting a meticulous study of geometric shapes and their meaning in space. The choice of colours is not insignificant. Blue, the colour of tranquility and infinity, is counterbalanced by pink, the colour of softness and emotion. Their superposition creates a delicate lavender hue, a marriage of calm and passion. The artist demonstrates here an exceptional mastery of technique and artistic vision, transforming simple shapes into a powerful visual language. The rectangular frame of the canvas frames the composition in such a way as to direct the gaze directly towards the luminous centre, thus drawing the observer into a visual and emotional journey. "Two Circles Intersecting" is a work that invites contemplation and reflection, each glance offering a new perspective. This painting is not simply an exploration of shapes and colours, but a meditative experience, a quest towards the understanding of universal harmony.
Presentation
Jaakko Antti Mattila, born in 1976 in Oulu, Finland, is a notable Finnish artist. He was educated at The Surrey Institute of Art & Design University College and graduated in 2001. Mattila has exhibited his work in both galleries and public spaces around the world, including Japan, the UK, Italy and France. Mattila's art explores light and nature, creating a unique visual expression. His work often deals with themes of infinity, grandeur and time. He uses various techniques, including watercolor, oil paint, printmaking, and sculpture, and often participates in collaborative community art projects. The patterns that often appear in his work – such as spheres, cubes and spirals – can be seen as nature's building blocks, moving from the very small to the very large. His work deals with elements that we know exist, but may not fully understand. He is fascinated by the unknown in the universe and life, aspects that even science admits it does not fully understand. This fascination with time and impermanence is at the heart of an exciting collaboration Jaakko Mattila has with Noma Projects. Together they have explored the idea of artworks created from seasonal ingredients
