Ben, whose real name is Benjamin Vautier (1935-2024), is a French contemporary artist of Swiss origin, considered one of the major figures in conceptual art, the Fluxus movement, and European contemporary art. Born on July 18, 1935, in Naples, of Franco-Swiss parents, he spent his childhood between Italy, Switzerland, and Turkey before settling in Nice in 1949. Self-taught, he opened the shop Le Magasin in 1958, which quickly became a meeting place for avant-garde artists in Nice. From the early 1960s, he joined the Fluxus movement alongside George Maciunas, Nam June Paik, Yoko Ono, and Robert Filliou, developing an artistic practice based on the idea, language, performance, and questioning the boundaries between art and daily life.

Ben's work is immediately recognizable thanks to his famous white writings on black backgrounds, which became a universal signature. Through short handwritten phrases such as "Art is useless. Go home," "I sign everything," or "Everything is art," he questions the notions of author, originality, intellectual property, identity, and artistic creation. His work explores the mechanisms of language, communication, and perception, making writing a plastic medium in its own right. Alongside his famous text-paintings, Ben creates drawings, assemblages, installations, performances, objects, photographs, and videos, in a deeply conceptual approach where the idea takes precedence over the object.

A historical figure of the Nice School, Ben participates in numerous international exhibitions and actively contributes to the development of conceptual art in Europe. His work dialogues with the research of Nouveau Réalisme, Fluxus, performance, participatory art, and relational art, while maintaining a free, ironic, and often provocative tone. Through his interventions, he questions the role of the artist, the functioning of the art market, and the very definition of the work of art, influencing several generations of creators.

Since the 1960s, Ben has benefited from numerous solo and group exhibitions in the world's largest institutions. His work has been shown notably at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the MACBA in Barcelona, the MAMAC in Nice, the Documenta in Kassel, as well as the Venice Biennale. His works are today in the collections of many international museums and among the most important public and private collections. Through a work where conceptual art, Fluxus, Nice School, writing, performance, installation, language, contemporary art, and critical thought converge with remarkable coherence, Ben remains one of the most influential and emblematic figures in the history of contemporary art.
