Art has to be something that makes you scratch your head. - Ed Ruscha

Biography

Born in 1937, Edward Joseph Ruscha IV is an American artist associated with the pop art movement. His mediums of choice include painting, printmaking, drawing, photography, and film. The versatile artist currently lives and works in Culver City, California.

A graduate of the Chouinard Art Institute in 1960, Ruscha quickly developed a unique visual language combining words, phrases, and images of everyday life. His paintings, screenprints, and artist's books play on contrasts between text and image, popular culture and artistic critique.

His work has been exhibited in top institutions worldwide, including the Centre Pompidou, Tate Modern, Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum, and Museo Reina Sofía. In 2005, he represented the United States at the Venice Biennale with his series Course of Empire. Ruscha has received numerous prestigious awards, including the J. Paul Getty Medal.
