Description
This original silkscreen print by Raymond Hains is a strong and characteristic example of the artist's conceptual approach to image, text, and urban visual culture. From the portfolio La Biennale Éclatée (The Biennale Disbanded) 1976.
The silkscreen print is hand-signed, dated, and numbered in pencil in the lower right.
Sheet size approximately 98 × 68 cm.
Raymond Hains used ribbed glass to distort the covers of catalogues from various countries invited to the Biennales of 1964 and 1966 : Brazil, China, the United Kingdom, Spain, Japan, Israel, and the United States. This work is based on the Venice catalogue - Venezia Viva.
The composition reflects Hains' long-standing fascination with typography, fragmentation, street imagery, and the poetic disruption of everyday visual language. Balancing abstraction and legibility, the work directly relates to his décollage practice and his engagement with torn posters, street signs, and layered urban surfaces.
Publisher : Galerie L’Elefante 1976.
Exposition : François Dufrêne - Raymond Hains : Une amitié entre l'art et les mots. Paris 2012.
Raymond Hains (1926–2005) is regarded as a key figure of the European post-war avant-garde. Together with Yves Klein, Jean Tinguely and Jacques Villeglé, Hains was a founding member of , the French counterpart to Pop Art established in 1960, which sought to reshape the relationship between art and life. Even though the group was short-lived and came into existence at an early stage in Hains’ career, the values of connecting the traditions of fine art with popular culture accompanied the artist throughout his life.
His work draws on urban visual culture, advertising, and typography—elements associated with Pop Art—while distinguishing itself through a more conceptual, critical, and intellectual approach, in which language, context, and material decay play a central role.

Presentation
Raymond Hains (9 November 1926 - 28 October 2005) was a French artist and photographer. Raymond Hains is a master of virtual reality. He is an internationally recognized artist who has been standing out since the '50s through his unique vision of the world. The image and the text are at the center of his practice.
The artist tries to demonstrate that everything is a sign, whether it be names of people, places, their photos or pictures referring to them indirectly (by analogy, by homophony, etc). And as he has a great sense of humor and a sense of wonder, he offers us his version of the facts as a child would imposes his point of view in front of the adults: with a poetic touch.
