Description
This photolithograph belongs to En jambes, a series of 1995 by the Spanish photographer Isabel Muñoz, printed on 270 g BFK Rives vellum in an edition of 300 copies. The series is devoted to the body in movement, and in particular to dance: the sheets that make it up, printed in warm sepia tones, include an embracing tango couple in a bare, rough interior and close, fragmentary views of entwined limbs, in which the camera concentrates on gesture, tension and the contact between two bodies. Photolithography, which transfers the photographic image to a lithographic plate for printing in ink on fine art paper, gives these images a velvety depth and a material presence distinct from a conventional photographic print, bringing them close to the tradition of original graphic work. As noted in the gallery's records, the impression is numbered and bears the artist's printed signature. Isabel Muñoz (Barcelona, 1951) is one of the most internationally recognised Spanish photographers, winner of the Premio Nacional de Fotografía in 2016, whose work centres on the body, dance and identity, often printed with great care in noble processes. In the 1990s she devoted several bodies of work to dance, from flamenco to tango, in which the sensuality of movement is captured with a sculptural sense of light and shadow.
