Description

This photolithograph from the series En jambes, made in 1995 by the Spanish photographer Isabel Muñoz and printed on 270 g BFK Rives vellum in an edition of 300 copies, shows a tango couple locked in a dramatic embrace. In a bare, half-ruined interior with a stained wall and debris on the floor, the man, in a dark suit and white shirt, presses his face against his partner's; the woman, wrapped in a black lace shawl that falls to her knees, raises one arm high, while her legs, in white shoes, cross between his in a characteristic tango step. A raking light from the right sculpts the figures and casts their shadow on the wall, and the warm sepia tonality heightens the intensity and timeless character of the scene. Photolithography gives the image a velvety depth and a physical presence on the paper that brings it close to original printmaking. The sheet is hand-numbered at lower left, bears a small red monogram stamp at the centre of the lower margin and the artist's printed signature at lower right. Isabel Muñoz (Barcelona, 1951) is one of the most internationally recognised Spanish photographers, winner of the Premio Nacional de Fotografía in 2016, whose work centres on the body, dance and identity, often printed with great care in noble processes.

Presentation

Born in Barcelona in 1951, Isabel Muñoz is a world-renowned photographer. Her favorite techniques are platinum prints and extra-large formats, which she uses in her approach to studying mankind to reinforce her message of passion for the body. At the age of 20, she moved to Madrid where she decided to devote herself to photography by enrolling in the Photocentro workshop. In 1986, she presented her first Toques exhibition at the French Institute in Madrid. The exhibitions succeeded one another for the next 20 years. She was a member of the VU collective. His black and white photographs are devoted to the human being, through body fragments or images of bullfighters, dancers or warriors. She tells us about the body in all its sensuality, and restores its beauty in the subtleties of platinum prints. Isabel Muñoz is in the collections of the European House of Photography (MEP, Paris), the New Museum of Contemporary Art (New York), the Foto Colectania (Barcelona), the Cervantes Institute (Mexico City, Guatemala City, La Paz and Shanghai), the Reina Sofía National Art Center Museum (Madrid) and the Fundación Canal (Madrid). Recognized by a large audience, the work of Isabel Muñoz has been rewarded with numerous prizes and distinctions. Recently, she received two World Press Photo Awards (in 2000 and 2004), the Bartolomé Ros Award (PHotoEspaña, 2009), the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts, awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Culture (2009) , the UNICEF Spain Awareness Raising Award (2010) and the Fundación DEARTE Prize (2012) and the National Photography Prize, awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Culture (2016).
