In this new series of wall plates, Behind Closed Doors, I reimagine source imagery from a book titled In Praise of the Backside. The book’s collection features women from behind, as captured most often by men, frequently untitled and anonymous. In my reinterpretation of these images, the women transcend their status as objects of line and shade, to become subjects with emotion, thought, and a place of belonging.
This artwork is a striking oval ceramic plate featuring a vivid depiction of modern relaxation. At the center, a figure with flowing hair lounges, dressed casually in a pink top and blue shorts. The use of bold, graphic lines contrasts with the ornate black and white floral wallpaper background, creating a dynamic juxtaposition. Plaid patterns on the floor add a touch of domesticity, grounding the otherwise surreal scene. A framed landscape in the background suggests a serene escape, enhancing the theme of tranquility. To the right, a cactus in a pot is meticulously detailed, embodying resilience and solitude. The artist employs a unique blend of traditional and contemporary motifs, elevating an everyday moment into a piece of contemplative art. The deliberate color choices and intricate patterns make this a captivating fusion of bold imagery and subtle storytelling.
Presentation
Alex Hodge, born in 1994, is a contemporary ceramic artist and sculptor based in Georgia, USA. She holds a degree in ceramics from the University of Georgia, where she graduated summa cum laude, and earned her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Miami, receiving several academic awards throughout her studies.
Her artistic practice offers a poetic and critical exploration of femininity through ceramic art. Drawing inspiration from classical antiquity, Greek vases, mythological figures, and female archetypes, Hodge creates works that blend personal storytelling with cultural symbolism. Her pieces often take the form of engraved porcelain cups, narrative wall reliefs, and objects inspired by prehistoric Venus figures, questioning notions of memory, love, strength, and vulnerability.
She employs techniques such as hand-building, sgraffito, painting, and sometimes applies gold leaf to enrich the surface of her ceramics. Each piece functions as a narrative fragment, often inscribed with emotional texts or poetic lines that reflect her inner world and broader reflections on womanhood.
