Graywacke Offcut Chair #8, 2023

Carsten In Der Elst   Emerging artists

This artwork is a striking sculpture of a diminutive chair crafted entirely from stone, presenting a unique blend of form and function. The chair's structural design integrates bold, angular shapes, lending it a robust and primitive aesthetic. Its seat is a meticulously carved flat slab, resting atop a cylindrical base that anchors the piece firmly. The backrest rises from the seat with an organic, rugged contour, reminiscent of a natural rock formation, adding a tactile contrast to the otherwise geometric construction. The two sturdy legs at the base are fashioned from similarly rough stone, providing stability and emphasizing the work's connection to earth and permanence. The texture of the stone is left raw, showcasing a spectrum of earthy hues, from deep browns to subtle greens, which enhance the sculpture's natural allure. This piece challenges the conventional perception of furniture, transforming a utilitarian object into a profound artistic statement. Its combination of simplicity and strength celebrates the raw beauty of natural materials, inviting viewers to reconsider the seamless integration of art and nature.
