Spowart's large-scale blankets link us with childhood, corporeality and folklore. The artist transforms self-portraits and photographs of her children using angles of the photos at eye level, to represent the artist's view of herself from the side. They serve as the main reference for her textile objects, alongside folklore motifs from different cultures.Â
The search for textiles becomes a challenge as Spowart uses textiles from Uzbekistan, her homeland. Sewing becomes the artistic meditative process and evolves around labour-intensive, contemplative practices to show the tactile nature and unbreakable bond between a mother and her children.Â

Zulfiya Spowart was born in 1991 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Having achieved a bachelor's degree in mural arts, in her homeland, and then working on a wide variety of projects, the artist has created a successful career in this field. Later in 2018, she opened her own studio for the services of various artistic areas. The studio continues to grow and supports the ideas of promoting cultural code in the public environment.
Currently, Zulfiya lives in London with her family and works at home in her small studio. She works with textiles, paintings, watercolours, wood and digital media. Her textile practice grew out of necessity whilst looking after her three daughters at home. It enables her to care for her children but at the same time continue her artistic exploration. Indeed, the children are an integral part of the work process, as tactility of textile artworks connects with the touch between mother and children.
In artistic practice, Zulfiya explores the subject of corporeality, central to which is a search for identity when the artist turns to her own biography and touches upon her experience of decolonization, emigration and motherhood. The culture of her native land - Central Asia, mysticism and handicraft occupy a special place in Zulfiya's practices.
Artworks of Zulfiya Spowart are presented in the permanent collection of the Ruhsor Museum of Contemporary Art in Samarkand, the public collection of the Regeneration Gallery in Tashkent and in private collections. In September, 2024 Spowart was the participant of the Regeneration Art Festival in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
