Description
This sculpture depicts the iconic Mandalorian helmet, reinterpreted through a radically mineral approach. Crafted from hand-molded cement and concrete, the work diverts a symbol of contemporary popular culture and anchors it in a raw, almost archaic materiality.
The smooth yet subtly textured surface preserves delicate traces of the artist's hand, affirming the manual gesture behind its creation. The matte gray concrete replaces the metallic sheen of beskar, transforming the futuristic armor into a timeless relic—as if the object had been fossilized or unearthed from an archaeological site. This shift in material creates a striking contrast between galactic imagination and earthly weight.
Through the use of industrial, enduring materials, Mitch Richmond fixes a fictional figure into a dense and silent sculptural presence. The work moves between pop culture and contemporary minimalism, questioning the notions of icon, protection, and collective memory.
