Description

A delicate yet intensely expressive female portrait, exemplifies the extraordinary sculptural sensitivity of Emilio Greco, one of the leading Italian sculptors of the twentieth century. Created in 1954, the work belongs to the period in which Greco produced a series of elegant female portraits and collaborated closely with the art critic Josef Paul Hodin, whose family maintained a close relationship with the artist.

The face, defined by harmonious and essential features, emerges naturally from the still-raw clay, creating a striking contrast between the refined smoothness of the figure and the unfinished texture of its base. The introspective expression, the graceful elongation of the neck, and the exquisitely modeled hairstyle convey an image suspended between classical ideals and modern sensibility—hallmarks of Greco's portrait sculpture.

A unique work, signed on the side and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.

Published in the exhibition catalogue (Il Cigno Edizioni), produced for the exhibition held at Palazzo Venezia, Rome, from 11 March to 25 May 2025, under the High Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.

Bibliography: Hodin, 1971, p. 54, no. 14, fig. 14.

Emilio Greco

Italy  • 1913  - 1995

Presentation

Emilio Greco (1913-1995) was an Italian sculptor renowned for his unique approach to modern sculpture, primarily focused on the representation of the human form with a poetic and expressive sensibility. His works, marked by a fluidity of line and a profound exploration of human emotions, continue to inspire and fascinate art lovers and collectors around the world. Born in Catania, Sicily, Greco began his artistic journey in a modest but culturally rich environment. At a young age, he trained under local masters, acquiring skills in sculpting in traditional materials such as stone and bronze. Although his formal education was limited, his apprenticeship allowed him to develop a solid foundation, enriched by the study of the great masters of the Italian Renaissance, such as Michelangelo, whose work had a significant impact on his artistic development. Greco's style is characterized by a combination of traditional techniques and modern innovations. He favors bronze and stone, materials that allow him to model the soft contours and elongated forms that will become his trademark. His favorite subjects are human figures, often women, captured in poses that evoke movement and emotion. This focus on expressiveness, combined with impeccable technical mastery, gives his sculptures a vibrant and timeless presence. Emilio Greco has participated in numerous international exhibitions, cementing his reputation on the world art scene. His works have been exhibited in renowned galleries and museums throughout Europe and beyond, receiving critical acclaim for their originality and emotional force. In addition, he has collaborated with various art institutions, which has allowed his work to be disseminated to an even wider audience and to receive several prestigious distinctions recognizing his contribution to modern art. Emilio Greco's originality lies in his ability to convey the complexity of human emotions through the simplicity of forms. His cultural impact is all the more significant because he was able to renew figurative sculpture, bringing to it a dimension that was both classical and deeply personal. His work continues to be a source of inspiration for contemporary artists and a point of reference in the study of 20th-century sculpture. In conclusion, Emilio Greco remains an emblematic figure of modern art, whose distinctive style and humanist approach to sculpture continue to enrich the contemporary artistic dialogue. His legacy endures, making him a pillar of modern sculpture, celebrated for his ability to capture the essence of the human condition with grace and empathy.
