Description
This sculpture marries the nature of driftwood with the finesse of terracotta. A young child reigns at the top of a natural column playing hopscotch. His posture is relaxed. The legs hang in midair with a touching simplicity.
The base made of raw wood retains all its roughness. The vertical grain guides the eye towards the top. This contrast of materials emphasizes the fragility of the human figure in the face of organic force.
The figurative style here is imbued with a fantastic dimension. The unusual scale transforms an everyday gesture into a dreamlike scene. The terracotta brings a chromatic softness that dialogues with the light tone of the wood.
The entire piece rests on a rectangular metallic base for perfect stability. The balance between strict verticality and the roundness of the character creates a visual harmony. This piece plays on verticality and silence. Every detail, from the modeling of the face in patinated brown bronze terracotta, testifies to precise technical know-how.
Presentation
Jérôme BARREAU has lived in the Arcachon Basin since the year 2000.
He studied at the École Boulle in Paris (higher school of applied arts for furniture trades) between 1985 and 1991.
He began his studies in plastic arts and very quickly moved towards wood sculpture.
He obtained a BT Technical Certificate, then a CAP and finally a DMA diploma in arts trades in wood sculpture.
Following his studies, he joined Parisian model and design workshops. The creation of products for advertising, design, architecture or even the cosmetic industry…
During almost 10 years, these numerous professional experiences allowed him to practice many techniques from manual trades, such as turning, milling, mechanical machining, molding, and of course sculpture with many materials…
In 2000 he leaves the Paris region for the Arcachon Basin.
It is from this moment that he begins to create his sculptures. In wood, in stone, in earth… engraving techniques too… His curiosity leads him to many horizons.
In 2001 he discovers a local association that offers painting and art history courses, he applies to animate sculpture workshops there… these courses still exist today...
He regularly animates modeling workshops on specific themes.
In parallel, he exhibits in art fairs to present and sell his work as an artist.
His profession today is to create pieces and transmit his passion for sculpture.
