Description

In Steel Sumocat: Metallic Majesty, Hiro Ando elevates one of his most iconic characters into a monumental sculptural presence at the heart of the series Metallic Feline Sonata: Legends in Stainless Steel.
Standing 100 cm tall, this mirror-polished metal sculpture embodies the playful power of Sumocat, a hybrid figure blending pop humor with Japanese tradition.
Its massive and stable posture directly evokes the world of sumo, an ancestral symbol of strength, balance, and ritual respect.
Yet Ando transforms this traditional reference into an accessible and contemporary Neo Pop icon.
The polished stainless steel surface acts as a mirror, integrating viewers and surroundings into the artwork.
Each reflection becomes part of the sculpture, making the piece alive and constantly evolving depending on its environment.
The contrast between the imposing body mass and the softness of rounded forms creates a compelling visual tension.
Sumocat thus oscillates between powerful wrestler and almost childlike companion.
The artist demonstrates his ability to infuse emotion and humor into an industrial, seemingly cold material.
The metallic brilliance also evokes urban modernity and the futuristic aesthetics central to the Nippon Neo Pop movement.
Here, Ando proposes a subtle fusion between Japanese cultural heritage and contemporary global artistic language.
The sculpture becomes a bridge between popular tradition and international visual culture.
The monumentality of the piece reinforces its impact in both private and institutional spaces.
Viewers simultaneously perceive strength, stability, and benevolence in this protective figure.
The artist’s psychology appears in this duality between cultural seriousness and playful pleasure.
Sumocat acts as a modern, reassuring, and universal totem.
The precision of the volumes reveals remarkable technical mastery.
The sculpture first captivates through its spectacular presence before revealing its symbolic depth.
This work confirms Hiro Ando’s position as a major figure in contemporary Japanese Neo Pop.
Steel Sumocat stands as a key artwork capable of dialoguing with both classical and ultra-modern architecture.
The piece combines visual strength, sculptural elegance, and emotional accessibility.
For collectors, acquiring such an important monumental polished steel sculpture represents an exceptional opportunity to own an iconic Hiro Ando work, combining rarity, aesthetic power, and long-term cultural and patrimonial value within a forward-looking contemporary art collection.

Presentation

Hiro Ando was born in 1973 on the island of Shikoku in Japan. Hiro Ando started his career as an illustrator in 1995. In 2005 he founded with Saori Nakamishi an artist studio in Tokyo to manage the creation and promotion of other young neo-pop artists who express their own popular culture in their creations. Today the studio "Crazynoodles" has ten artists.

Hiro Ando is a versatile artist. He works in oil on canvas, digital media or video. His technique consists of making several sketches before painting on canvas. The painting shapes itself and emerges in the streets of Tokyo at night, and combines lots of colors and graphics. Hiro paints dark cityscapes and goldfish all over the canvas.

The marriage of the two subjects makes the whole of the painting dynamic and violent, with a strange feeling of eternity given by the goldfish which recall old Japanese paintings and watercolors. The sculpture is a recent addition to the media used by Ando, who started working on a series of orange, green sculptures ... inspired by Japanese popular culture. Thus the cat, which is a lucky charm in Japan, like the Maneki-Neko, takes different forms such as the samurai or the sumo wrestler.

The artist translates this theme into a modern style. The shiny and smooth materials, the vivid colors, the brutal but rounded shapes of Hiro Ando's sculptures take us to the world of manga in which the artist's generation grew up. Hiro Ando's art is the meeting between the Meiji era and Manga, he is Shogun in the world of Pokemon, he is traditional Japan seen through the eyes of young people: he certainly belongs to Japanese neo pop art.
