Description
Egg tempera, shellac, and ink on Chinese paper. Verso with signature stamp of the Ulrike Michaelis Archive. The plates and bowls featured in the painting appear only as shadows. It is the shadow of the profile of a dish rack. The real can only be guessed at through the shadow. A new painterly reality emerges in the picture.
Clemens Hutter has developed and continues to develop his own techniques for working with iron. He works with the material's deformability and explores its artistic potential. One such technique is the freezing expansion or freezing bursting of hollow bodies. Water is frozen in a sealed hollow iron body and expands, sometimes even bursting. This expansion creates the overall form, as in this sculpture. An elongated cuboid, fitted with clamps at regular intervals, was stretched to create impressions of the clamps.
Clemens Hutter also leaves the color and texture to his material. They are determined by the modulations that rust produces as a natural oxidation process. Ultimately, the artist's play with his material is fascinating, skillfully showcasing its authentic qualities.
