Description
Freestanding in its asymmetrical balance, The Unity of Multiplicity No.6 consists of two parts, inextricably connected in form. This dyadic relationship of perceptively separate components in mutual structural dependency acts as metaphor for the world view characterized by multiplicity, fragmentation and separation on the one hand, and its ultimate ground of wholeness and singularity on the other.
Finding a delicate balance in the world is at the core of many philosophical traditions. I find the wisdom of this message to be particularly beautiful and inspiring. In a life of incessant motion, how is peace to be found? Is there an Order which acts as a guide within us all?
A poem I wrote during contemplation of the form:
The sparrow flickers
With a twitch
As it comes to rest
On a branch
But only for a moment
An exploration of this balancing form, preceded by No.1,2,4&5 of the series, No.6 is the first to exhibit a knife-cut surface. After applying white acrylic paint to the Red Cedar surface, the edges of the cuts were sanded with varying pressure and focus in selected areas. The whole piece was then waxed with a beeswax and mineral oil mixture. I think the tapered "tails" (especially the bottom one) and the thin connecting arm harmonize well with this textured surface treatment. Despite the chiseled surface, the inner contours are rather smooth (taking long carving strokes with finely sharpened knives), forming a crisp negative shape for the inseparable and equally important space between the material.
Due to the piece's shallow depth, it can be placed on a narrow surface; and also, if placed on a rotated angle, will work well on a broader surface, console table, end table, plinth, etc. Top-front-side lighting from either side or both sides will produce favourable shadows and illumination. The piece may also benefit from multiple spot lights from both right and left top-front-side positions. The lighting and spatial possibilities are many and experimentation should be enjoyable.
The wood forms are carved by hand using tools acquired from around the world. It is a joy to use sharply-tuned, good quality tools to make subtle forms inspired by contemplating the nature of truth, perception and reality.
Presentation
Upon completion of an honours degree in Design from York University / Sheridan College in 2005, Mike lived in Japan to deepen his studies of the unique culture. After his return to Canada, the deeply imprinted memories of the Japanese gardens, architecture and arts began to emerge through his woodcraft and visual arts. The wood sculptures Mike has been carving since 2017—inspired by yoga, modern art and metaphysical philosophy—have been well received from the beginning of their career and have continued to mutate and evolve ever since. The work has been shown in YVR International Airport; at Ki Gallery in Cully, Switzerland; Craft Council of British Columbia; and Dalbergia: Fine Wood & Objects; and is on permanent display on the Ritz-Carlton Super Yacht Evrima, in Infinity House in Boca Raton - Florida, and in the lobby of Suncadia Resort in Washington.
