Biography

Cristina BanBan was born in Spain in 1987, and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona in 2010. Her semi-autobiographical nude portraits have been exhibited around the world, and celebrated for their Rubenesque and neoclassical style. She produces these works through the mediums of lithography printing, acrylic painting, and mixed media collage.

BanBan's work explores the human emotional and psychological state, often leaning into depictions of melancholy, intimacy and solitude. Her work has been exhibited in shows all over the world, at the Royal Academy of Art in London, The Hort Family Collections in New York, and the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris.

Her monumental figures, characterized by generous forms and expressive postures, engage in a dialogue with the history of Western art, from Pierre Paul Rubens to Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, while offering a contemporary reinterpretation of classical canons of representation.

Her work has been the subject of numerous international solo exhibitions, including Mamá at Perrotin New York in 2023, The End of the Beginning at Perrotin Paris in 2022, and Under the Skin at The Hole in New York. She has also participated in major group exhibitions at leading institutions and galleries across Europe, the United States, and Asia.

Cristina BanBan's works are now held in several important public and private collections, including the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, the Hort Family Collection in New York, and other international collections dedicated to contemporary art. Her work is regularly presented at international art fairs such as Art Basel, Frieze, and The Armory Show, contributing to her growing international recognition.

Represented by Perrotin, Cristina BanBan has established herself as one of the leading figures of the new contemporary figurative painting scene. Through her acrylic paintings, lithographs, collages, and mixed-media works, she offers a powerful and intimate vision of the body, renewing representations of femininity in contemporary international art.
